“The home of underground boxing.” That’s not just a marketing ploy or clever tagline. Adapted from a series of illegal boxing parties and housed in a former activist hangout, Overthrow’s claim to the gritty underground is as palpable as the ancient graffiti splattered across its doors. In the ‘70s and ‘80s, 9 Bleecker was a meeting place for people who went against the grain— a countercultural hotspot where progressive thinkers gathered to challenge the system and orchestrate a revolution with the help of their monthly publication, “Overthrow.” Countless influential characters like Abbie Hoffman, Hunter S. Thompson, and Joey Ramone passed through these doors to partake in the uprising. aunched in the heart of Downtown New York in a building that was once a former activist hub directly across the street from the former punk club CBGB’S, Overthrow has become more than a group fitness boxing brand. Overthrow has become a lifestyle brand, reflecting cultural and political movements across the world.

Driven by founder Joey Goodwin , Overthrow has established the Bleeker Street site as a destination for boxing world champions, leaders within film, fashion and music. Overthrow is the go-to for high intensity classes for boxing and fitness enthusiasts. In addition Overthrow provides subsidised boxing classes for people battling Parkinson’s disease, donation classes for Planned Parenthood and the ACLU, as well as a weekly defense class for members of the trans community. Overthrow is proud of its ongoing work in support of women’s rights and other community programming.

In September 2017 , Overthrow launched its 2nd site in Williamsburg in a former “Brooklyn punk bar institution” which overnight became a boxing and fitness destination.

Just like its East Village counterpart Overthrow Brooklyn has inherited a space at 256 Grand Street that is rich with history. Located in a neighborhood which is quickly being gentrified, the locals still proudly call Williamsburg , Los Sures. Overthrow's new home was once a Hispanic night club before becoming Luxx a pioneer in the Electroclash music scene, and transforming into the riotous Trash Bar where punk and hardcore bands played. The former inhabitants of both Overthrows were purveyors of an underground lifestyle that long defined the East Village and Brooklyn. A lifestyle built on the values of originality, culture, and defiance which continues to inform what we do here at Overthrow.
